A more mature approach
Advance Wars: Dark Conflict (AWDC) is once again a delightful and entertaining game by Intelligent Systems, based on the well-known turn-based franchise, where you meticulously plan and calculate your tactics. Unfortunately, this was also the last game in their series...

In this installment, the cartoonish image was thrown overboard in favor of a more mature appearance. The story (which is quite well-crafted) is also more mature, with added emotions and adult themes. The graphics are darker, edgier, and have a sort of manga vibe.

Underneath it all, this is still Advance Wars: you're still pondering every turn and sometimes thinking three steps ahead. A brilliant addition is the fact that each individual unit can 'level up' by dealing damage. This makes you more dependent on certain high-ranking units, making you more protective of them. This adds a lot more depth to your strategic thinking.

The CO (commanding officer) system has also been revamped. Unlike in previous installments, now a CO must be placed on board a unit. This CO traditionally builds up a power meter, but the effect of a CO is limited to the unit's zone it is in. This makes you think very carefully again: do I go on the offensive and put my CO at risk?

You can probably tell; AWDC is a delightful game that keeps die-hard TBS fans glued to their DS once again.

Darker and More Mature Tone in the Advance Wars Series
Advance Wars: Dark Conflict for the Nintendo DS really surprised me with its darker and more mature tone compared to the earlier entries in the series. The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic world and follows a group of survivors trying to hold their ground amidst conflict and chaos. I feel that this setting is a striking change within the series, adding an extra layer of depth to the game.

What I personally appreciate is that the tactical gameplay remains true to the core of the series. There are in-depth strategic options that provide a significant challenge, keeping me engaged for hours on end. The new units and adjustments to the mechanics give the game a breath of fresh air, making it not just a rehash of previous entries. The graphical style and soundtrack enhance the bleak atmosphere, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the world of Dark Conflict.

While the post-apocalyptic setting may not appeal to everyone, I think the game offers both strategy fans and loyal followers of the series an intense and captivating adventure. The variety of units and the strategic depth make it a must-try for anyone who enjoys tactical games. It’s impressive how Advance Wars: Dark Conflict manages to cater to both newcomers and veterans of the series.

Gruff game with strategically challenging gameplay.
Intelligent Systems has decided to ditch the loyal cast of Advance Wars and embark on a brand-new story with new characters. All the strategic elements are still present in the game with many additional weapons, and the game's strategy goes even deeper than previous Advance Wars games. Your vehicles will also gain experience as they destroy enemies. They have 3 levels. A level 3 tank is stronger than a level 1 tank. The differences are quite significant when you train the characters during battles. Of course, this is only for one battle and until the vehicle is destroyed. The challenge has become much higher, which is a good point.

The downsides are the soundtrack, the story, and the characters. It's quite grim: the art style of both the characters and the battles has completely changed and become quite dark. The music is rather heavy metal and quite different from the previous Advance Wars games. The charm of the old games is gone. This is the biggest mistake they have made, as Advance Wars: Dark Conflict is likely to be forgotten by most fans. It is probably also one of the reasons why no new Advance Wars games are being made, as it was not a great success.

Dark and Mature Tone in the Advance Wars Series
A more "dark" Advance Wars: Dark Conflict, where the gameplay has remained unchanged and offers plenty of enjoyment for strategy fans.

This strategy game introduces a new setting and characters compared to the previous games in the series. I really liked that the game has a darker and more mature tone. It might not be the same for all fans, but that's a matter of taste. The AI can be quite strong at times and the difficulty level can vary, but the gameplay remains addictive.

All in all, it's a solid addition to the Advance Wars franchise and strategy games are just a joy to play on the small DS handheld.
