A formidable opponent for Mario Kart!
Diddy Kong Racing originally appeared on the Nintendo 64, a title I unfortunately missed out on at the time. So, when the DS remake came out, I was thrilled. Finally, Mario Kart has a real competitor in the kart racing genre!

In Diddy Kong Racing DS, you can race with various cool characters in animal form, some of which can be unlocked in the Adventure Mode. More on that later. First, let's talk about the basics of the game. You race in cars on the ground, in planes through the air, and in hovercrafts over water. These options make the race tracks incredibly diverse. The themes and polished graphics also create a pleasant atmosphere, enhanced by the music. By hitting balloons on the track, you receive items. From rockets to energy shields, each one is fun and useful.

The races are divided into different game modes, with the Adventure Mode being the most interesting. When Timber's (one of the racers) island is taken over by Wizpig, it's up to Diddy Kong and his friends to defeat this scary magic pig and his minions. You do this by winning races and completing challenges in different worlds. These worlds are full of secrets, making it incredibly enjoyable to discover them. There is definitely a challenge in this mode, so you'll spend quite a few hours on it!

In addition to smaller game modes like Trophy Race, there is also a local multiplayer mode. This allows for playing together with up to 8 players! It works smoothly and guarantees a lot of fun, just like Mario Kart does.

Thanks to the three ways of racing, Diddy Kong Racing DS has become a serious contender for Mario Kart. There is so much to explore, the race tracks look fantastic, and the multiplayer adds great value as well. Definitely not a game to overlook!

Diddy Kong Racing DS is a weak imitation of the well-known N64 classic
Back on the old Nintendo 64, Diddy Kong Racing was one of the few racing games that could rival the masterful Mario Kart. However, the transition of Diddy Kong Racing to the DS is a disappointment due to the inferior controls and the annoying stylus challenges.

At first glance, Diddy Kong Racing DS is a decent port of the original. Graphically, the game naturally can't compare to the N64 version, but thanks to its warm and vibrant colors, the game still retains its charm. As Diddy or one of his cheerful friends, you can race with karts, hovercrafts, and planes through more than 20 exotic and challenging tracks. Unfortunately, the vehicle controls are somewhat lacking, especially noticeable with the hovercrafts that have no grip on the road at all.

The best part of Diddy Kong Racing is the extensive Adventure Mode where you must save the peaceful Timber Island from the evil pig, Wizpig. During the Adventure Mode, you'll face various (race) challenges and unlock new tracks and characters. The opponents in the Adventure Mode have their own driving style and are often not easy to beat on the first try. This provides enough challenge for both young and old players.

The major downside of Diddy Kong Racing is the new features specifically designed to utilize the unique capabilities of the DS. For example, to get a boost, you have to rotate with your stylus or blow into the microphone. However, this makes it impossible to accelerate and steer at the same time or keep an eye on the racetrack. Additionally, some challenges in the Adventure Mode require you to steer with your stylus, which is extremely sensitive and almost makes it impossible to complete some races.
