The controls are simple and intuitive: the L and R buttons on the DS act as the flippers, while you can activate specific moves and special power-ups via the touchscreen. The addition of powers like the Bombs, which allow you to take out enemies, and the Boost Ball, which gives you extra speed, makes it surprisingly feel like a Metroid game. These extra elements not only make it more challenging but also a lot more fun than a standard pinball game.
Each level is unique and filled with missions typical of the Metroid series. Instead of just scoring points, for example, you need to defeat enemies to open doors, complete missions to gain access to new zones, and find special upgrades. Each area has its own challenges and setting, creating a sense of progression.
The boss fights are particularly enjoyable and add a surprising twist to the traditional pinball gameplay. During these battles, you need to cleverly use your pinball skills and power-ups to defeat powerful enemies like the Metroid Queen and Thardus. The variation between regular pinball levels and actual boss fights keeps it continuously interesting and fun.
The graphics in Metroid Prime Pinball are bright and detailed, beautifully depicting the locations from the Metroid Prime games. Each level is filled with elements from the Metroid universe, such as Phazon beams and Space
Pirates. The game features a classic Metroid soundtrack. From the intense music during battles to the futuristic sounds of power-ups and enemies, the audio strongly conveys the Metroid atmosphere.
The difficulty level of Metroid Prime Pinball is excellent. It offers challenge without being too hard. It requires precision and quick reflexes, especially in levels with many enemies or during boss fights, but it's always manageable. The extra elements and variation in the levels keep it enjoyable and addictive.
The game includes a Mission Mode, where you can replay levels and boss fights to achieve the highest possible score. There’s also a Multiball Mode that adds extra challenge by bringing multiple balls into play. Lastly, there’s the Wireless Mission, which is the multiplayer mode that works via DS Download Play. This means you only need one copy of the game to have up to 8 players join in the pinball fun. Unfortunately, there’s only one level available, which is a bit of a letdown.
Metroid Prime Pinball is a creative spin-off that combines addictive pinball gameplay with the atmosphere and style of Metroid. The various levels, enemies, and power-ups provide plenty of variety. It’s a must-have for both pinball enthusiasts and Metroid fans.
