An accessible arcade racer. You quickly get the hang of the controls. It even has a storyline where you lead a team and challenge rivals in street races. That's about it for the story; don't expect anything more original than that, but for a racing game, you appreciate what you're offered.
In Need for Speed: Carbon - Own the City, I love that there's the option to customize cars. Don't expect significant differences in handling, but changing the look is enjoyable in itself. There are various race formats alongside the classic races, which is another plus.
However, the graphics are not particularly impressive for the DS, and the environments all look quite similar. In terms of visuals, it did fall a bit short, I thought. Especially with the fast-paced action and car customizations, it's fun for a quick play if you enjoy arcade racers. But it really could have looked better.

Although the controls feel quite good, you can tell that the DS hardware brings some limitations, especially regarding the physics of the vehicles and the sensation of speed. Still, it’s impressive how the developers have tried to convey the racing feel on a small screen.
Graphically, Need for Speed: Carbon - Own the City does its best with the available power of the handheld. The environments and cars sometimes lack detail and variation, but given the limitations of the Nintendo DS, that’s understandable. The addition of an open world is an ambitious move, although it sometimes feels a bit empty to me and lacks the dynamism you would expect from larger versions on other consoles. Nevertheless, it’s enjoyable to be able to drive around freely and choose your own route during the races.
One point of criticism is the inconsistency of the AI, which can make races feel unfair or too easy at times. This can be frustrating, but if you’re looking for a portable Need for Speed experience, the game still offers a decent dose of racing fun. Especially for fans of the genre who want to race on the go, this is a nice addition to your game collection.
