Legal Street Racing and Car Upgrades Take Centre Stage
A shift in the series, but that hasn’t dampened the fun. Need for Speed: Pro Street revolves around legal street racing (a bit less thrilling than illegal, but alright), where you compete against other racers on circuits instead of tearing through the city like in previous NFS games. This immediately gave the game a different vibe compared to other titles in the series, in my opinion.
The controls are always quite intuitive, using the D-pad for steering and the buttons for acceleration and braking. That works well enough. The environments were simple, but the cars looked fairly good, especially for the DS. The sound was decent; the engines roar loudly and the music was energetic, which definitely enhanced the experience.
What’s nice is the focus on upgrading your cars, and there are various types of races, from drifting to time trials and sprints. There are upgrades to earn for your car, which made you faster. It might lack some of the flair and freedom of other NFS games, but it’s certainly a solid game that fits well with the DS.
