The Pokémon world in Diamond/Pearl edition is called Sinnoh and is largely based on the northernmost island of Japan: Hokkaido. This is also clearly visible on the map of the Sinnoh region in Pokémon Diamond Version. Not only is the shape of the island the same as Hokkaido, but cities in the Sinnoh region correspond to cities in Hokkaido as well.
For example, Jubilife City, the major city in Sinnoh, is located in the same spot as Sapporo, the largest city in Hokkaido. And Canalave City is known for its canals just like its counterpart Otaru, which is situated in the same location in Hokkaido.
Furthermore, the Pokémon League and the Resort/Fight/Survival area are located on separate islands in the Sinnoh region, and these islands correspond to the Russian Kuril Islands and Sakhalin. Islands that were part of the Japanese Empire before the end of World War II.
