I'll have a Jill sandwich, please!
Who doesn't know Resident Evil (RE)? The horror-survival game that is seen as the cornerstone of this genre. On the DS, you can relive those times of yore (1996). You control Jill or Chris, members of the S.T.A.R.S. team who must investigate suspicious activities in an abandoned house. Soon enough, you'll find out that bloodthirsty creatures have set their sights on you. With a wide range of weapons, you must fend them off. You gather weapons and ammunition. You shouldn't be too generous with the latter: the supply is limited. You can pick herbs and make different combinations to heal yourself. Additionally, you must keep your eyes peeled for certain items that will help you progress in your search. The graphics are not very impressive, as the game is a direct port of the 1996 Playstation classic. However, the graphics are sufficient for the DS: everything is easily recognizable, and the monsters are distinct. The house you must explore is large enough to complete the game in 10 to 15 hours. After that, you can try out some mini-games or play the more challenging Rebirth mode. The original game featured voice-acting, which was a highlight at the time. The voice-acting remains exactly the same: cringingly bad. It's almost a reason in itself to purchase this game, as it's simply hilarious at some points (think of the 'Jill sandwich'). This ported version of Resident Evil: Deadly Silence provides a fun experience on your Nintendo DS, but don't expect much more from it. However, thanks in part to the dreadful voice acting, it has become a cult classic that you MUST have in your collection.

Classic survival horror with pixelated charm and customised DS controls
A strong handheld version of this classic survival horror game! It follows the original story of Resident Evil: Deadly Silence, where you explore an abandoned mansion as Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine, filled with zombies and other enemies.

The graphics are quite pixelated, rather ugly, but somehow that makes it even scarier. The atmosphere is well maintained with the dark environments. The absurdly poor voice acting is also back, but that’s part of the charm!

The controls have been slightly adjusted for the DS, with the option to use the touchscreen for quick actions, like healing. Other than that, it’s still the same, including the tank controls. The limited ammunition makes it challenging. The touchscreen options sometimes feel a bit forced and could easily have been left out, in my opinion.

The game is also somewhat shorter than the console version. Why, I don’t know. It can feel a bit clumsy due to the DS controls, but it remains a fantastic horror game.
